Binance reported an estimated USD 6.3 billion security breach on October 29, potentially marking cryptocurrency's largest theft in history. The world's largest crypto exchange traced unauthorized withdrawals across ten blockchains after attackers allegedly compromised its internal systems. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs linked the operation to North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group.

The incident prompted Binance to suspend deposits and withdrawals while investigators traced the missing digital assets. The exchange initially identified a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop as a possible entry point. Attackers reportedly used their access to reach a service container and execute unauthorized transactions across multiple networks.

Binance said the estimated financial impact stands near USD 6.3 billion, while partners have frozen approximately USD 3 billion. However, TRM Labs estimates that industry-wide freezes reached roughly USD 2.7 billion through stablecoin issuers and blockchain interventions. Binance also pledged to cover every loss through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.

The exchange said its initial investigation found no evidence of leaked wallet private keys. Binance also revoked affected address authorizations and began working with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners. The company plans to publish a detailed technical report after investigators verify the incident's full scope.

TRM Labs attributed the attack to TraderTraitor with high confidence, citing blockchain evidence and similarities with earlier operations. The group has links to North Korea's Lazarus hacking network and previously targeted Bybit. That 2025 attack caused approximately USD 1.5 billion in losses, making the Binance incident considerably larger.

The latest breach also triggered pressure across cryptocurrency markets as investors reacted to security concerns. Bitcoin dropped more than 3% to around USD 76,368, while Ether also recorded significant losses. Analysts warned that attacks against major centralized exchanges could weaken confidence in digital asset platforms.

The investigation continues as Binance works to recover assets and restore normal exchange operations. The incident highlights growing cybersecurity risks as cryptocurrency platforms manage increasingly large pools of digital assets.
