India has removed airfare caps at a time when fuel prices are rising. This move may lead to higher ticket prices soon.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation ended the fare limits from March 23. These caps had fixed ticket prices between Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 18,000. The government had set these limits during flight disruptions. Now, operations have improved, so the caps are no longer needed.
Airlines can now decide ticket prices freely. This gives them more control. Prices may go up during busy travel periods. Airlines may also lower fares when demand is low.
At the same time, ATF prices are expected to increase. Aviation fuel makes up about 40% of airline costs. Any rise in fuel price directly affects ticket rates.
The next fuel price revision will happen on April 1. Officials have said the real impact will be seen then. Global fuel prices have already increased. Tensions in West Asia have pushed oil prices higher. Supply routes have also faced problems.
In March, domestic fuel prices stayed lower than global rates. Oil companies did not pass the full increase to airlines. This may change in April. Fuel prices in India may rise sharply if they match global levels.
Airlines have already started adding fuel surcharge. Air India and Air India Express added Rs. 399 on domestic tickets. IndiGo added charges between Rs. 425 and Rs. 2,300. Akasa Air also increased fees on many routes.
Airlines want to recover rising costs. But they must be careful. Very high fares can reduce demand. Fewer passengers can affect business.
The government is watching the situation closely. Different ministries are working together. The aim is to protect passengers and support airlines at the same time.
This change comes before the summer travel season. Demand usually rises during this period. Higher demand and rising costs may push domestic airfares up.
The aviation sector now moves to a market based system. Airlines get more freedom to set prices. But rising ATF prices remain a big challenge.
Passengers may find fewer cheap tickets in the coming weeks. Early booking may help save money. Travel on less busy days may also cost less.
