Jio Platforms Limited (JPL) has entered the top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) 2025 list. The company jumped 320 places to become the 20th-ranked company in the list and was the only Indian technology company to make it to the top 200.

This puts JPL among the global tech leaders such as Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft. According to the company, the rankings are based on the published PCT application data collected by WIPO, a body that monitors global patent applications made under the Patent Cooperation Treaty framework.

Jio's Patent Portfolio Reflects Deep-Tech Ambitions

Jio's increasing intellectual property portfolio focuses on emerging technology that will drive the future of digital infrastructure over the next decade.

It focuses its R&D on 5G and 5G Advanced technologies, 6G networks, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.

As per Jio Platforms, it had accumulated a total of 6,817 patents until March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 patent applications were filed in India, and 4,424 applications were filed in international jurisdictions.

The company has also said that it has been granted 1,009 patents globally, out of which 538 are granted in India and 471 are granted overseas.

Rapid Rise Amid Slower Global Growth

The company pointed to its 320-position jump coming at a time when global PCT filings grew by less than 1%, reflecting the rate of innovation going on in the company.

"The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company," said Akash Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms Limited.

"It demonstrates the velocity of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies, which will continue to grow in the coming years. I would like to dedicate this achievement to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which envisages India becoming a creator, owner and exporter of technology to the world," he added.

"We are proud to contribute to India's journey towards becoming a global deep-tech powerhouse."

Driving India's Shift Towards Technology Creation

In addition to telecom, Jio has increasingly been focusing on creating proprietary technologies with commercial applications.

The company is working on future-proof projects such as 5G & 6G radio technology, next-generation core network, satellite communication technology and Agentic AI platforms through the JioBrain programme.

The investments enable the company to place the patent portfolio not just as an indicator of innovation production, but also of future commercial possibilities, the company said.
