Sistema Bio Raises $ 53 Million for Climate Capital: What's Next?

By turning farm waste into clean energy and carbon credits, the company is creating income opportunities

Pardeep Sharma

Sistema Bio, a climate technology company working with small farmers, has raised $53 million in new funding. This major investment, announced in March 2026, will help the company grow its climate finance platform called “FarmCarbon.” The goal is to connect farmers to global carbon markets while reducing harmful emissions from agriculture.

Strong Support from Global Investors

The funding round was led by BNP Paribas Asset Management, along with support from British International Investment and the Shell Foundation. These investors are known for backing projects that focus on climate solutions and long-term impact. Their involvement shows strong confidence in Sistema.bio’s approach.

This money is not only meant to expand business operations but also to build a system where farmers can earn income through carbon credits. It represents a shift in how climate funding reaches smaller communities.

How the Technology Works

Sistema.bio is best known for its biodigesters. These are simple machines that turn farm waste into clean biogas and natural fertilizer. Farmers can use the gas for cooking and energy, while the fertilizer improves soil quality.

So far, the company has installed around 150,000 biodigesters across different countries, including a large number in India. This wide reach shows that the model is already working at scale.

The impact numbers are also impressive. Sistema.bio has reduced more than 692,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. It has processed over 15 million tons of organic waste. In addition, it helps improve soil health across more than one million hectares of land every year.

Why FarmCarbon Matters

The new platform, FarmCarbon, focuses on turning these environmental benefits into financial value. When farmers use biodigesters, they reduce methane emissions. Methane is a very strong greenhouse gas, and cutting it can make a big difference in fighting climate change.

FarmCarbon will track these emission reductions and convert them into carbon credits. These credits can then be sold to companies that want to offset their emissions. This creates a new income source for farmers, which can improve their livelihoods.

At the same time, this system helps solve a big problem. Small farmers usually do not have access to climate finance. By grouping many farmers together, Sistema.bio makes it easier for them to join global carbon markets.

Growing Role of Carbon Markets

Carbon markets are becoming more important as countries and companies try to meet climate goals. Investors are now looking for projects that can show real and measurable impact.

Agriculture is one of the biggest sources of emissions, especially due to methane from livestock and waste. However, it has not received enough funding in the past. Sistema.bio is trying to change this by focusing on rural areas and small farms.

The company is also working on better systems to measure and verify emission reductions. This is important because buyers of carbon credits need reliable data before they invest.

Expansion Across Countries

Sistema.bio is already active in more than 35 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It has been steadily expanding its reach, especially in regions where farming is a major part of life.

The company has set a goal to reach one million farmers by 2030. This target fits well with global efforts to reduce emissions and promote clean energy.

New programs are also being launched in countries like Nepal and Indonesia. These projects aim to make biodigesters more affordable and widely available to small farmers.

What Comes Next

The new funding will help expand FarmCarbon. More farmers will join the platform. More biodigesters will be installed.

The company will also improve its systems to track carbon savings.

More investors may join in the future. Governments may also support such programs.

A Bigger Change

This is not just about one company. It shows a bigger shift in climate action.

Now, even small farmers are becoming part of the solution. Clean energy and farming are coming together.

Sistema.bio is helping create a future where farmers earn more and the planet becomes healthier at the same time.
