OPINION: Foreign language being taught in schools is nothing new. But, what if English is not the primary language teachers are speaking in American classrooms? Well, that is what is happening at P.S. 105.
Things sure have changed at P.S. 105 since 2000 when I left the Sunset Park school. The school, which is found on 59th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, is now 88% Chinese.
The school has the longest wait list, consisting of 76 students for the kindergarten classrooms. There are twelve, yes, twelve kindergarten classes alone, and that still does not seem to accommodate the incoming numbers of Asian children.
One reason for the school's popularity is the bilingual-speaking teachers. Since most of the children are Asian, the school tries to hire as many Chinese-speaking staff members as possible. But the question: Is this right?
Although many immigrants have flooded to the Sunset Park area, shouldn’t their children adapt to the American culture and language? Obviously, many parents do not think so, which is why they insist on sending their children to Public School 105.
Parent Coordinator of P.S. 105, Melody Zhao, said "There are so many parents visiting, it's crazy," She had already seen 15 mothers of children who were on the waiting list earlier this month.
The Asian population of Brooklyn’s Chinatown, parts of Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Borough Park, has more than tripled to about 150,000 since the year 1990.
The Department of Education plans to have four new schools opened in District 20 for the next school year, because of the overcrowded classrooms in the neighborhood.
The schools in the distrcit will most likely be taught by bilingual teachers. The only thing that parents can do is hope that their children get into P.S. 105, or wait for one of the other schools to open.
