OPINION: Saint Francis College has the slogan “The Small College of Big Dreams” but should it really be touting its size to its students?
There are a number of benefits to being a small college including better teacher to student ratios and smaller classrooms. At the same time, people on campus wished they also had some place to relax such as a courtyard or even a tree to sit under.
Unlike Wagner College and Saint John’s University’s large and over the top green-filled campuses, SFC has all of the same amenities packed into a small city block full of gray cement.
The small school filled with drama queens and tough guys might get to students sometimes, but it’s never a problem because, for the most part, everyone gets along just fine. “I like that it's small enough for everyone to get to know you, you're not just another number” says senior Jaclyn Mistretta.
For the most part, the faculty is great and so are the students and everyone treats each other with courteous respect. Students are very lucky with professors especially because, in many bigger colleges and universities, it would be a miracle if the professor knew a student’s first name.
A small college is key in getting to know the many alumni upon graduation. In turn, this forms close-knit circles which is great, later in life, for networking.
Even the basketball players and other athletes have it easier than larger universities. The pressure to win isn’t nearly as much which allows more ample time to study and experience other activities on and off campus.
