1980’s movie buffs are anxiously awaiting word on whether or not one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, Ghostbusters, is getting a third installment.

The “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters 2” director, producers, and actors (at least most of them) are all set to return in every fan’s dream movie.

So far, a preliminary script has been written by “The Office” writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. According to the script, the film will feature the original cast except for Rick Moranis. Regardless of the progress that has been made so far, there is a snag in casting that may cease production or cause the entire project to never get off of the ground. In interviews, Bill Murray has stated that he simply hates doing sequels to big movies and calls the upcoming “GB3” his “nightmare”.

Despite his disdain towards sequels, Murray did lend his voice in last summer’s “Ghostbuster’s: The Video Game” which was a spiritual successor to the two previous films (no pun intended).

In a more recent interview, Murray said that if he was to do a long-awaited third installment it would “have to be a great script” and he “needs to be killed off in the first reel”.

Back in the 1990’s, Dan Aykroyd wrote a screenplay for the third installment and was set to take place in an alternate reality of Manhattan. Due to the aging cast members, it was also rumored that the only star attached was Murray and he was to have a walk-on role near the end of the film. The original ‘Busters were to hand off their business to a new younger squad who would have included Ben Stiller or even Seth Rogen and Michael Cera.

Aykroyd’s script was not well received by both critics and the original cast alike and was completely abandoned after being in “development hell” for so many years.

The success of last years hit “Ghostbusters: The Video Game” sparked new interest in an old classic; something not many movies can do lately. If filming begins this summer, audiences can expect “Ghostbusters 3” to rise from the grave sometime in 2011.
